Bioengineering was a program study that instantly catched my eye when I was looking for prospective major to take in undergraduate. Having an interest in Biology, yet possesing a keen interest to work in industry field, bioengineering serves as a ‘happy middle’ that satisfies both of my needs. After finishing the study in Bioengineering, I am proud to say that it truly broadens my knowledge on the intersection between life science and engineering. Not only that, it also imbued me with great interest in sustainability, which is also one of the basic idea of bioengineering study: providing more sustainable means of production through the utilization of life science. All in all, bioengineering serves its unique role in a very specific niche of combination between life science and engineering, yet at the same time felt really broad due to its wide application in various industries. Coupled with awe-inspiring lecturers and a comprehensive curriculum, bioengineering leaves its graduates with more holistic and fresh perspectives for the future of industry.

The chance to understand a new concept on how we can shape a better future through biological-engineering approach in the middle of climate crisis is something that made me choose this program. I believe bioengineering program covers a good portion of engineering, science and entrepreneurship that help me perceive a holistic understanding when reviewing a system, whether it is a bio-system, or even a system in general. I have been applying the knowledge and soft skills I gained along the study in my work as part of a business development team at a biotech startup. The most distinguished feature of this study would be the broad understanding in both science and engineering and the agility of the program in covering topics of innovation and technology in bio-industries delivered by great lecturers that are experts in each of their fields.

A unique, cool and useful Major
Bioengineering is a unique major, not only because it is a pioneer program in Indonesia, but also because of its curriculum which study life sciences and engineering. The fast rhythm learning method in Bioengineering requires the student to be able to adapt and understand quickly. This experience makes me a stronger and tougher person, especially when entering the professional world/industry sector. The lecturers’ assistance is also very beneficial in broadening the students’ perspectives on what is needed by industry and how this major can contribute to it. I realized the value of studying life science and engineering after graduating and eventually working in the industry. Since we can understand from two perspectives, we play an important role in the industrial world.
