Indonesia, as a tropical country, has a great diversity of biological resources and various renewable and sustainable bio-material resources. The main problem is Indonesia’s biological resources have not been able to optimally assure the nation’s prosperity. To intensify the benefits and productivity of our tropical biological resources, a professional management of the resources is necessary in order to answer the national and global economic challenges. Hence, it is essential to have enough human resources who are professionally competent in engineering the bio-product-based production system.

Nowadays, as an industrial revitalization initiative in Indonesia, the biological resource-based industry has been developed. One of the notable bio-based industries in Indonesia is the production of bio-fuel (BBN) as an attempt to generate an alternative energy. For the development of bio-based industries such as bio-fuel and other bioproducts, many bachelors in Bio-engineering (Bio-engineers) who have a strong background in life sciences and technology also capable in optimizing the production efficiency through bio-system engineering are needed. These bio-engineers also have to understand the biological agents especially plants as “the production machinery” and as the essential units which cannot be separated from the whole production system.

Bioengineering ITB Study Program is not only connecting the field of Engineering and Life Sciences but also answers the society needs of Bio-engineers who are capable to apply the engineering fundamentals for the development of the industry of bio-products with the emphasis on plant-products.

Definition of Bio-engineering

Bio-engineering is an interdisciplinary study of Bio-sciences and Engineering which is applied to modify a bio-system to improve its functions and uses.

This bio-system engineering comprises the definitions of biological-process engineering, applications of the engineered biological agents, constructions of a new bio-system-based instrumentation or inventions of new technologies for bio-materials development. In other words, Bio-engineering can be applied to construct the production system for the development of bio-based industries.

The importance of Bio-engineers

The vast development of Science and Technology in the last decades in Agriculture, Health, Pharmaceutical, Food products and Animal feeds industries requires an improvement of downstream-stage processes to increase the efficiency and productivity of biological agents in industrial scale. To support this development, mastering the field of engineering is necessary especially the one related to designing a mass production system, structure quantification, mechanization, labor, and downstream process technology.

Consequently, a Bachelor of Bio-engineering (Bio-engineer) with a certain competence in bio-system-based engineering is needed. Bio-engineers are crucial in designing a system and mass production of bio-materials and bio-products such as enzymes, therapeutic proteins, bio-active compounds, bio-energy, bio-membranes or bio-degradable plastics.
